The Crucible- Vokis

Play each of the "Vokis" to the right of the blog. (You just click the Play button under each character. Make sure the volume on the computer is on.) As a class, or individually, decide which character each Voki represents from The Crucible. Post a comment here telling me who each one is. You can call them Voki #1, #2, etc.

Who Needs Parents?

You recently listened to a Newsweek article titled "Who Needs Parents" by Sharon Begley. It's an interesting article discussing Judith Rich Harris' book The Nuture Assumption which basically says parents have no effect on how their children turn out. The only thing parents contribute to their children is their genes (DNA). She claims a child's peers (friends) and the environment have more of an effect on who the child becomes.

Judith Rich Harris says, "Through no fault of their own, good parents sometimes have bad kids."

I want you to write and discuss your thoughts on this. "Good" parent? "Bad" kid? "Bad" parent? "Good" kid? What does it all mean to you? What makes you who you are and who you will become??

Welcome to a New School Year!

Welcome to English 11!
I'm very excited about this school year! I have lots of exciting things planned to get you to enjoy English class, or at least, not hate it! I plan on including some new technologies, using the Promethean Board, new Web 2.0 tools, even maybe collaborating with other classrooms.
Now, you guys will hear may say this a hundred times this year: You will all be taking the English Regents exam this year! It is the only Regents exam that is 2 days long - multiple choice and 4 essays over the 2 days! BUT- You WILL be ready for it AND you can all do it!! That is our focus for this year.
Two of our favorites this year that we will be covering are: The Crucible by Arthur Miller (about the Salem witch trials) and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I really think you will enjoy them both! We will also be doing some short stories and other literature throughout the year.
Remember, you can always come and ask me for help or anything!
